Gum disease
Gum disease is more common than you think. In fact, it’s one of the top 10 most common diseases in the world. This is bad news, as gum disease can not only cause inflammation and discomfort, but it’s also the leading cause of tooth loss.
Periodontitis
Periodontitis is a severe form of gum infection that starts with gingivitis (sore, inflamed gums), caused when plaque penetrates the gumline and hardens into tartar that can’t be removed by brushing alone. Left untreated, periodontitis leads to receding gums, infection, bad breath and the loss of gum tissue. Without professional dental care, tooth loss is inevitable. Plus, studies reveal links between gum disease and conditions like strokes and heart disease, due to an increase of bacteria in the body.
Who’s at risk?
- People with poor or neglected oral health
- People who already suffer from gingivitis
- Older people
- People with a genetic predisposition to developing periodontitis
- People with suppressed immune systems
- People who smoke or chew tobacco
- People who are going through hormonal changes such as thoise related to pregnancy and menopause.
- People with certain diseases such as diabetes, rheumatoid arthritis and Crohn’s disease.
The solution
Depending on the severity of the infection, we can either remove or stop the spread of the infection to prevent your condition worsening through a deep cleaning procedure known as scaling and root planing that removes the build-up of plaque and tartar. You may also be prescribed antibiotics to fight the infection.
Benefits
- Stops the progression of gum disease
- Promotes gum healing
- Cleans your teeth above and below the gumline
- Eliminates bad breath
- Protects the roots of your teeth
Rebuild your smile
Severe gum shrinkage and tooth loss can leave your face looking sunken, distort features and age you prematurely. However, we offer a range of treatments that can help to reshape gums, replace missing teeth and restore your confidence.
Bone grafts and sinus lifts
We can use a bone graft (often harvested from your own body) to help stimulate growth on either your jaw or the area between your jaw and your sinuses. This helps to strengthen and fill out your jawbone to give your face a fuller, more youthful appearance. Plus, it creates a solid foundation on which to implant new teeth or dentures.
Dental implants
We have a range of options for dental implants, depending on your individual needs and preferences. This includes dental crowns and bridges, along with fixed or removable dentures.

FAQs
How can I prevent gingivitis or periodontitis in the first place?
A good oral hygiene routine, along with regular check-ups at the dentist are vital to avoid developing any form of gum disease. We also advise people not to smoke, as this can leave people vulnerable to infection.
Is deep cleaning painful?
Some people experience a little discomfort and swelling after having scaling and root planing. However, this is usually mild, and goes within a couple of days.
