Endodontics

Are decayed and broken teeth ruining your smile? Are you worried about losing a tooth and ending up with a visible gap? Endodontics – otherwise known as root canal therapy – is the only treatment that can save decayed and broken teeth that would otherwise have to be removed.

Spot the signs

Root canal treatment is needed when the soft pulp or tissue of your tooth, which contains nerves and blood vessels, is infected. Talk to us if you are experiencing any of the following symptoms:

  • Pain when eating or drinking hot or cold food and drink
  • Discomfort biting or chewing
  • A loose or broken tooth
  • Swollen gums, jaw or cheek
  • Changes to the colour of your tooth

    FAQs

What causes tooth decay and broken teeth in the first place?

People might need root canal treatment for a range of reasons, from tooth decay to leaky fillings and trauma to a tooth following an accident or injury to the mouth.

What happens during a root canal treatment?

The bacteria in the root canal is removed and the infection is treated. The root canal is then filled, and the tooth is sealed with a filling or crown.

I’ve heard that root canals are painful: how much does it hurt?

Root canal treatment is usually performed under local anaesthetic meaning that it is no more uncomfortable than having a filling. You may feel a little tenderness immediately after your treatment, but this should lessen and disappear after a few days.

Will I have to change my routine after having root canal treatment?

To help your teeth heal after your treatment, it’s important to maintain good oral hygiene. We also recommend avoiding smoking, fizzy drinks and sugary treats, along with foods that are hard to bite.

What will my tooth look like after the root canal?

In the past, most teeth that underwent root canal treatment would darken. However, with advances in techniques, there are several treatments that can restore the natural colour of your teeth and complete your smile.
